Employment
- February 2006 - Present. Electrical Supervisor Electrical Contractor.
I've returned to the electrical contracting industry. My roll involves design, co-ordination, installation, commissioning, maintenance and servicing in numerous commercial and industrial environments. Here my past training and skills are put to full use and the challenges more rewarding.
- April 2003 - February 2006. Electrical Manager Fruit grading / sorting equipment manufacturer.
Due to down-sizing of our Research & Devlopment department I moved back into production and concentrated on the
Electrical design and PLC programming of specialised one off machinery. In January 2004 as the result of more company restructuring I became the Manager of the Electrical Department. The new position as Electrical Manager covered all aspects of our Electrical Department. I also became the appointed "Nominated Electrical Mechanic" for the company so it could retain its "Registered Electrical Contractor" license.
- 2001 - April 2003. Realtime software engineer in Research and Development.
In January 2001 I was assigned to our R&D department as a "Real-time software engineer". This involved the writing of programs for the real time control of fruit grading / sorting equipment. I was also the Network Administrator for the company's computer network systems spanning two sites.
The main site consists of approximately 30 PC's networked to 4 servers, (Linux and Windows based operating systems), and connection to the internet. The second site consists of approximately 20 PC's networked to two servers (Linux and Windows based) and a satellite internet connection. A good proportion
of my time is taken up writing, installing, commissioning and testing PLC programs I have written for special one off machines built to various customer individual requirements.
- September 1997 - 2001. Electrical Supervisor Fruit grading / sorting equipment manufacturer.
In September 1997 I was hired as the Electrical Supervisor for fruit grading / sorting equipment manufacturer. My roll involved the specifying and ordering of all electrical equipment required by the company. I was responsible for the organising and scheduling of the labour needed to complete the machines being manufactured, often to very tight deadlines. Panel design, layout and wiring were also part of my responsibilities, along with power and control circuit design. Any PLC programming or modifications required was also part of my roll along with the design and drawing of all the electrical drawings for the machines using AutoCAD. It was while in this roll I started to become involved in the companies IT side of things. In 2001 I was given the opportunity to move over to the R&D department of the company.
- December 1994 - September 1997. Electrical Leading hand. Textile manufacturer.
In December 1994 I started working for a large textile manufacturer. The site covered 40 acres and the company employed approximately 1000 employees. I was the leading hand of the Electrical Department. My duties here involved the day to day running of, and all purchases for the electrical department. I was responsible for the electrical maintenance and installation of all machinery. I co-ordinated a
team of 11 consisting of electricians, apprentices, trades assistants and contractors. The site also has 9 22KV substations that I was responsible for the high voltage switching of.
- December 1993 - December 1994. Technical Sales Representative, motor control gear and industrial products.
My roll as a Technical Sales Representative for motor control gear and industrial products involved sales and support of a range of Australian made products. It was a new position within the company that had just released a range of motor control gear into the industrial market. I was
responsible for starting an industrial client base from scratch. I liased with end users through to original equipment manufactures (OEM's) and engineers responsible for the specifying electrical equipment for various projects.
- November 1981 - December 1993. Service electrician with an industrial electrical contractor.
I served my four year apprenticeship with this company and was offered a position as an A Grade special class electrician at the end of this time. Here I was primarily involved in maintenance and breakdown service of machinery in all types of industrial environments. These industrial environments covered a wide range including anything from small kitchen cabinet makers to large petrochemical sites. Some other industries covered were pharmaceutical manufacturers, repetition engineers, steel foundries and food processing plants. The machinery I worked on was as varied as the industries. Anything from table saws through to packaging robots. My position in service would involve travelling up to eight
sites per day and performing electrical breakdown service work on machinery that was faulty. On a few occasions I would spend anything from a week to several months on a site at a time. During these periods my duties would involve all aspects of the electrical trade whether it would be supervising a large installation or as a relieving maintenance electrician.
