Queen's Birthday long weekend 2002 Print

Queen's Birthday long weekend 2002

Gavan had been on a bit of a Volcano kick for a while. I promised him that when I got another car I'd take him to the Blue Lakes in Mt Gambier South Australia.

The Queens Birthday long weekend became the perfect time to do it. We left on Saturday morning at about 10.00am after his swimming lessons. We drove straight to Mt Gambier (after a half hour stop at MacDonalds), found our Motel, checked in grabbed a map and headed off to the blue lakes. Here are some snaps. The next day we headed off to Warrnambool. On the way I saw a turn off too the "Princess Margaret Rose Cave" I decided to have a look. We got there at 5 to 10 and the first tour was at 10, so we fluked a pretty personalised tour of the caves as there was only 6 in the group. Unfortunately I didn't take the camera down for some shots as it was well worth it. We left the cave and kept heading for Warrnambool. We stopped at Tower Hill just out of town for a look. The photo with Gav bending down was taken at a lookout / rest area about halfway up the hill. The photo doesn't do the steepness of the climb any justice. Where the path disappears it turns left and keeps heading down until it eventually meets the road you can see in the background. The next photo of Gav is him hiding behind "his" volcanic rock. From Tower Hill we checked into our motel and was told that some whales had come in. We went down for a look. They were there and very close to the shore and easy to see, Gavan had more important things to do. He was busy digging holes in the sand and watching the water rise up in them, much more entertaining than whale watching.(Click on any of the images for a larger view.)

On the final day I had planned to head home via Camperdown and stop for a look around. The weather was so bad that all we did was visit Mt Leura at Camperdown. The wind was blowing a gale and the rain was coming in horizontal. We drove up to the top of the Mountain but because of the inclement weather the views weren't that good. They would be spectacular on a fine day. I took a few quick pictures and then we headed home. (Click on any of the images for a larger view.)
