Jake Print
This page is about Jake our Border Collie

Jake was whelped in August 1996. He came with papers and his official name is Ardenwood Nevan? As soon as I was allowed, (after immunisation etc), I took Jake to Dog Obedience classes. We only went for 18 months as it got harder to go with Gavan getting older etc.

I had researched dog breeds and settled on a Border Collie going against all the negatives I had read about them. Like they are a working dog and need to be exercised, they are intelligent and so get bored, a backyard is not the place for one, they are not always good with children as they can get frustrated with them when they are trying to round them up and the kids don't go the way they are supposed to etc. We struck it lucky with Jake. You couldn't have a dog with a better temperament.

All the bitches of the litter were pre-sold and the 3 males weren't. Jake seemed like the biggest friendliest and for appearance sakes had symmetrical markings. Coming from show stock he has a long coat. His working instincts are still strong though.

He has a very definite personality and at times he seems just plain weird. He chases flys and bees, water, shadows and torch lights. He chases birds from the garden, it seems he believes that is one of his jobs. Washing the car can be a pain when you have a dog constantly 2 foot from the end of the hose at all times trying to catch the water. If you're talking to someone and you're casting a shadow, don't use your hands or move your head, Jake will be there trying to dig up your shadow.

I'll bore you with more details about Jake when I get a chance, like how he blitzed everything in the few obedience competitions I had entered him in except for the stays, I was only doing dog obedience training to have an obedient dog, not for competition so I wasn't to phased by it (although the other dog owners who dogs broke their stays because Jake was sniffing their butts weren't to impressed).

Border Collies usually have one of two types of ears, want to know what they look like? Jake has one of each, a semi-errect one and a rose one.
